I have worked with many LGBTQ+ people and their families, but no two situations are ever alike. Just as we are all individuals, the journey for each family is unique. Today, unlike decades ago, many families are supportive of LGBTQ+ issues, but it all seems to look different when it is your own family. That is natural. A transition is occurring and transitions are often hard to welcome. An effective coach can help a family identify what is creating uncomfortable feelings. Once identified, the family/family member can proceed with goals that will lead them to acceptance.
LBGTQ+ individuals are also coming from their own individualized life journey. Some experience immense amounts of support; others face complete rejection; most experience a bit of both. LBGTQ+ identity does not define the entire person, but it is certainly a significant part; consequently, many decisions are made with this identity being part of the equation. Because of the significant number of young people who have allowed me to journey with them through the tough conversations, decisions, and experiences related to their LGBTQ+ identity, I am particularly confident in my ability to coach others in this field. In addition, this issue was my primary area of study while working on master's degree in counseling from Western Kentucky University.
I feel fortunate to work with this generation of young LGBTQ+ individuals as I help them navigate the pathway towards a happy and fulfilled life rooted in love, mutual respect for others, and PRIDE in our unique identities.
